sea sponges keep a rigid shape using a substructure of silicone that they grow themselves! some sponges have even weaponized this structure into stabbing caltrops called spicules, giving themselves literal knife bones.

so who’s to say that sea sponges are “simple”? in a lot of ways they’re just as advanced as any other animal, they just took it in a weird direction.
